The electronic cigarette is a device, and like any other device, it is prone to pose safety hazards if it is not handled properly. While there is no risk that you could burn down your home as is the case with smoking tobacco sticks,  your vape kit could put you and the people around you at risk if you do not handle it properly.
The first and foremost safety rule of handing e-cigarettes is to read the instruction manual that comes with your device. Each vape kit is designed differently so is important to see what the manufacturer has to say and adhere to it. With that said, there are some general safety rules that every user of e-cigs needs to know.
It is important to keep your vape kit away from children and pets. Preferably, locked up in a drawer or a cupboard that is room temperature and dry. This is crucial because e-liquids are usually toxic. Also, children could harm themselves or destroy the components of your vaping kit if you allow them to play with it.
As stated in the paragraph above, e-liquids (particularly those with nicotine) can be toxic when swallowed by humans and animals. If your e-liquid spills directly on your skin, your mouth, or eyes, rinse immediately with lots of water. If you observe any symptoms such as irritation, consult a doctor immediately.  Since nicotine can be harmful to touch, it is vital to avoid spilling e-juice on your vape. If you do, clean it at once.
Never attempt to inhale or vape undiluted nicotine; that is an incredibly dangerous thing to do. Also, it is not advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women to vape. Also, do not allow children use your e-cigarette and do not vape around them – there’s a reason the device is only sold to persons under 18 (under 21 in some countries).
It has been observed that plastic (polycarbonate) e-cig tanks tend to crack or melt when certain e-liquids are put in them. Highly acidic e-juices like citrus, cinnamon, malic acid are some of the culprits in these cases. It is for this reason that experts recommend vape tanks made of polyethylene terephthalate (PETG) plastic, stainless steel, or glass. Some of the latest tanks on the market today are made of Pyrex glass, which gives them an extra durability.
As a rule, do not expose your e-cig kit to extreme heat or cold; this means you shouldn’t leave it out under the sunlight or in the snow. While vaping, if you notice that the temperature of your mod is getting very high, take a break and allow it cool down. Immediately you start to detect problems with the way your mod functions, it is important to start plotting for a replacement. While a faulty power/fire button may not seem like anything to you, it could potentially lead to an explosion or something else when you least expect.
If your vape mod comes with replaceable batteries, it is important not to store the batteries well when they are not in use. Ideally, put your batteries in a box (nothing metallic, of course) and store it in a dry place at room temperature. Never use any other charger for your e-cig except the one that came with the device. If your charger gets damaged, ensure the replacement you buy has the same specifications as your original charger.  Using the wrong charger could destroy your battery or do worse.
If you are using a rebuildable tank atomizer (RTA) or a rebuildable dripping atomizer (RDA), it goes without saying that you should use only the specified replacement coil and make sure you fix it properly. Failing to do so could result in an electrical short circuit.
These are some of the important safety tips to keep in mind if you are a vaper. While e-cigs can be fun, do not forget that it is an electronic device and treat it as such.
